Hume started off working for The Hartford Times newspaper company before moving on to United Press International and the Baltimore Evening Sun. From 1970 to 1972, he then worked for syndicated columnist Jack Anderson.

During the presidency of Gerald Ford, the documents were made public through congressional hearings, a FOIA lawsuit, and the so-called “Family Jewels” discoveries.
