CERTIFICATE TRAINING PROGRAMME IN LEGAL STUDIES AT GREENFIELD COLLEGE(GFC) CENTER OF APPLIED LEGAL STUDIES AND RESEARCH (CALSAR)
BRIEF BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON GREENFIELD COLLEGE
The Greenfield College, Sunyani (formerly College of Science, Arts and Education) was established in 2016 to blend academic work with that of practical daily life of society in order to provide significant interaction between the two for a healthy, worthy and knowledgeable society. The college was borne out of the new thinking in higher education which lays emphasis on the need for universities to play a more active role in addressing problems of the society, particularly in the developing world. The college is affiliated to the Kwame Nkrumah College of Science and Technology-Kumasi and accredited by the National Accreditation Board. In February 2017 the college began academic work with its first batch of thirty-five students admitted into the faculty of law. So far, the College has produced 65 LLB (Law) graduates, some of whom have gained admission to the Ghana School of Law (Makola) where they are pursuing the Professional Law programme towards qualification as lawyers.
THE CENTRE FOR APPLIED LEGAL STUDIES AND RESEARCH (CALSAR)
In line with the vision of the Greenfield College to blend academic work with practical training that addresses the developmental challenges of our various local communities and nation at large, the Center for Applied Legal Studies and Research (CALSAR) is set up with a mission to lay a solid foundation for attracting ambitious law students and other graduates to nurture in them the attributes and skills required for knowledgeable and competent lawyers and other legal professionals who are well equipped to identify, understand and address the socio-legal, economic and political challenges of our people and nation. The Center, as a unit under the Law Faculty, seeks to pursue the academic and practical goal of producing law graduates who are well equipped to excel in further professional legal education and to play a meaningful role in society using the law to tackle the basic legal challenges facing ordinary Ghanaians, corporate Ghana and public sector institutions and agencies. Therefore, the mission of the CALSAR is to train the general public, law students and budding career legal professionals in lawyering skills and socio-legal research that are relevant for addressing the legal needs of Ghanaians in the 21st century and beyond.
A 3-DAY CERTIFICATE TRAINING PROGRAMME IN LEGAL STUDIES
The Centre for Applied Legal Studies & Research at Greenfield College is organizing a 3-day Certificate programme in Legal Studies
WHY CERTIFICATE IN LEGAL STUDIES (CLS)?
The Certificate in Legal Studies program is designed to meet the personal academic and professional aspirations of individuals who are interested in pursuing legal education for qualification as lawyers and other legal careers. The Certificate in Legal Studies course is the ideal foundation in law whether an individual wants to pursue a career in the conventional legal professions such as a barrister, solicitor, attorney, judge, magistrate, court registrar, etc; or he/she wants to explore some of the emerging career pathways in the legal field such as law enforcement (NIB, CID, etc), court administration, paralegals, legal assistants, court reporting (journalist), politics (legislators); or just to gain a basic understanding of the principles/concepts of the legal field to serve as a guide in your workplaces and personal interests. As a practical-oriented academic program, the CLS is infused with heavy doses of experiential learning methods and approaches that afford participants the opportunity to have hands-on experience in tackling real-life legal problems in society. In this context, while learning the rudiments of the law and legal systems, participants invariably also provide vital pro bono legal services to vulnerable and poor members of target communities who otherwise would not be able to afford commercial barristers and solicitors.
OVERVIEW OF THE CLS PROGRAM
The world of work today is so fluid that many people go through several career modifications and changes in their working life. Both law and non-law graduates, not being an exception to this trend, need to be offered complimentary skill-sets in creativity and innovation that will not only enhance their effectiveness in legal issues but also in other non-law workplace settings. In a nutshell, the CLS is designed to equip participants with basic knowledge and skills to understand the law, legal system and the legal profession in Ghana and their ubiquitous impact on all aspects of the everyday lives of ordinary people.
