Eben:
After your DBE in science and mathematics, can you go in for Bsc mathematics?
Will you be granted study leave for the said course?
Josh:
Yes, after completing your DBE, you can apply for your bachelor degree, in any field of your choice. The application can be done through the following modes: Mature and regular
John Favoured:
Good evening Doc, am almost done with my Bachelor’s degree BE.D in JHS education with majors in English Language and wants to be a lecturer in a teacher training college in the next 3 years, how do I achieve this sir?
Josh:
Yes, John, all you need to do is to apply for master’s degree in the field of study and you can apply for tutorship in any college of education
Eben:
Will u be granted study leave with pay to pursue Bsc mathematics?
Josh:
Normally, GES is very strict on the courses the give study leave. GES gives study leave for courses that are essential at the pre-tertiary level.
For your case,u pursued Bsc not B.Ed, and I think that will give you a greater opportunity
So if you apply for bachelor of science in mathematics education, you should be given study leave with pay
Johnny:
Please, Sir, I want to know the difference between a bachelor of education and a bachelor of science education.
Thank you.
Example: BED physics and BSc physics education
Josh:
Anytime a bachelor degree is mentioned, know that the course concerned will run for 8 semesters (equivalent to 4 years)
For the courses you’ve mentioned; the bachelor of education is a four year studies into course under education.
With bachelor of science education, you will learn topics or courses in science as well as educational topics and methodologies that will enable you teach science effectively.

Simon Agongzorko:
Degree in basic education verses degree in secondary education. What are the merits and demerits Sir?
Josh:
Degree in Basic Education will afford you the opportunity to teach at the basic level of Ghana’s educational system (kindergartens, primary and jhs).
The other will allow you to teach at the SHS level.
Having said all that, it’s the content that will determine whether secondary degree holder can teach at the SHS level.
A degree in secondary education,
John Favoured:
Thanks for the response but the master’s degree are there sandwich and distance learning options run by UCC or UDS
Josh:
Master’s degrees are available through distance and sandwich modes.
However, master’s with the prefix, MED- Master in Education
MA-Master in Arts
Can be delivered through those modes.
OBAAHEMAA AKOTO:
Please I offered business in shs and did general course at college with r.m.e as elective can I offer Bsc.maths with economic,Bsc maths with ict and Bsc Enterprise management and entrepreneurship
Josh:
You can pursue mathematics very easily provided you have excelled in your WASSCE.
However, for you to get admission very easily, you can apply through the MATURE APPLICATION mode, where you can use your training college certificate together with your WASSCE.
But note that some universities will invite you got GAT-general Aptitude Test and SAT-subject area test.
John Favoured:
Good evening Doc, am almost done with my Bachelor’s degree in JHS education with majors in English Language and wants to be a lecturer in a teacher training college in the next 3 years, how do I achieve this sir?
Josh:
Thank you very much, what is the title of your degree? Please state it and I can give vivid response
Yes, the minimum qualification for tutorship in Colleges of Education is MPhil which is a rigorous regular MPhil course normally for 2 years.
Robert:
Please Dr. what is the difference between masters and MPhil.
Josh:
This is a very good question. This question baffles lots of people.
Everywhere in the world we have postgraduate studies, this study is undertaken after first degree.
This is called Master’s.
Depending on the country you’re will determine your postgraduate degree.
In Norway for instance, MSC is the same as MPhil and this comes before your PhD
But in Ghana, the master’s degree that you can earn before PhD is MPhil, any other master’s you’d have to do top-up to acquire your MPhil.
Nkrumah Clement:
What is the differentiation between the 3-semester program and the 5-semester program run by UCC?
Josh:
These are professional programs to upgrade the teacher professionally.
These courses can’t allow you to acquire an MPhil for your PhD unless you undertake extra tuition in the field of interest.
The standard degrees to enable you get your MPhil and subsequently your PhD so that you can be an authority in a field of study is bachelor degrees.
Any other substandard degrees won’t allow you to get the desired content course in a field of study.

Larbi, Richard Ofori:
Hi Doc. Please after reading B.Ed Basic Education (JHS Option with SOCIAL STUDIES MAJOR) what are the appropriate M.Ed programme I can do to end up teaching at the College of Education or the University ?
Josh:
I will advise you to apply for MPhil course in social studies.
Please note:
If you want to be an academician, all your certificates (in first degree, master’s and PhD) mast be in the same field of study.
Avoid “skirt and blouse” qualification. That’s, for instance, getting first degree in science and second degree in mass communication.
This won’t make you an academician!
So please, as said already, apply for MPhil in your first degree.
This will allow you to teach at the Colleges of Education.
John Favoured:
What’s the cost of admission for a master’s degree program with UCC?
Josh:
The tuition fee for master’s program in UCC is almost GH 7,000.00 and depends on your field of study. But government also pays some and the student also pays the rest. (Cost sharing).
For an academic year.
Note that an academic year comprise two semesters.
Nkrumah Clement:
I am interested in applying for INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY offer by UCC sandwich program but I did not do E-maths, economics, accounting and business management. Will they admit me?
Josh:
Information technology has a lot of mathematical courses (for instance, calculus) so you’d need to show or demonstrate that you can cope with the maths aspect of the course.
POSSIBLE R:
Can I major in economics n minor in business management under the ucc five semesters sandwich program
Josh:
What course would you want to pursue under the five-semester program?
If the course allows for such arrangements then you can undertake it.
But please, before you apply for any course, do thorough check on the program to see it meets your future aspirations. If not, get inclined to the ones that will let you aspire in the future.
Patrick Adu Asamoah:
Dr my question is l want to do my PhD in Management Education in UCC and the programme is regular meanwhile l teach at the Jhs level and wants to how the working class do it with limited challenges hence wants to know how their meetings for teaching and learning are done , probably to know the number of times they meet in a week and also is more of going for lectures or directed reading which reduces face to face lectures
Josh:
MPhil and PhD courses are regular disciplines of a university.
Which means that for you to enroll in any of the courses, you’d have to meet all the entry requirements and be a regular students (meaning be a resident student).
However in Ghana, majority of the PhD candidates are working class, so they need to work as well as attend lectures.
So the students (PhD candidates) can reach agreement with the department they are in and seek for lecture days to be put on particular days so that the students can work and attend classes.
Diana:
Sir after my DBE I did BED in basic edu (sandwich) from UEW now which masters program will be good for me
Josh:
Apply for MPhil in basic Education.
OBAAHEMAA AKOTO:
In 2016 I bought uenr forms and they gave me admission on Bsc. enterprise management and entrepreneurship
That same year I got admission at college
Can I apply that course with my college cert and s.h.s at uenr
Josh:
Yes, you can apply for it with the requirements you have.
Abdul-Latif Braimah:
Please sir can I do Mphil directly without doing MA?
Josh:
Yes, and this is what I want to encourage everyone to do.
After your first degree, apply for MPhil in the subject area you studied at the first degree level.
Don’t accept any short cuts!!
Unless, you don’t want to climb higher on the academic ladder.
OBAAHEMAA AKOTO:
Can I continue with my r.m.e that was my elective in college
Josh:
There’s no course at the university called RME.
Probably, you may find it under a particular course of study.
Note the following:
FIRST DEGREE>>> MPHIL>>> PHD
Any short cuts aside the routes outline above will only prolong your educational journey.
Larbi, Richard Ofori:
Ohk thanks 🙏
But please going straight for M.Phil in Social Studies and doing M.ed in Social Studies before the M.Phil in Social Studies which one will be the best for the Colleges or the Universities to accept you as a Lecturer?
Josh:
Now, for you to lecture at the university, you need a PhD.
But an MPHIL is required to tutor at the Colleges of Education.
Abdul-Latif Braimah:
Please as a social studies major BED holder, can I do my masters in Maths related discipline?
I did Elective Mathematics in SHS and I really love Maths
Josh:
If you do that your certificates will be “skirt and blouse”
And you can’t do your MPHIL
For you to do MPHIL, your first degree course must be the same the MPHIL course.
For example, BSC in Mathematics Education will allow you to do Master of Philosophy in Mathematics Education.
Winter Francis:
Is the course content of distance mode of studies and regular mode of studies the same, taking into account BE.D science education (mathematics), that’s is, 8 semester for both?
And, are they of the same value after one has acquired any of the two?
Josh:
Taking UCC and UEW for example, a sandwich course content in mathematics and that of regular are not the same.
Note that in a university set-up, regular students are given the desired tuition attention compared to any other mode of entry.
Tettey-Annor Gideon:
Pls can I pursue Mphil in any mathematics field with my B.ED Mathematics from VVU??
Josh:
Yes, it is possible to get enrolled in vvu.
Sammy:
Please boss my question is…
I’m aspiring to be a mathematics lecturer
I have completed college of education (general)
I did business with no elective mathematics
How can my dream come to pass please
Josh:
Even though you haven’t done e-mathematics, I believe you have done core mathematics and have a good grade in it. This can help you. Use the mature application mode for the application. And You must be prepared to cope with high order concepts in mathematics
During my first degree, I sat in class with people who haven’t done e-mathematics.
Robert:
Please Sir, can you throw some light on degree in food and nutrition program?
Josh:
Degree in good and nutrition is mostly under BSC course and it falls under faculty of science.
It will take 8 semesters (4 years) to complete the course. This degree will afford you the opportunity to teach at the SHS level, and can also serve as a requirement for your MPHIL and PhD in food and nutrition.
Mrs Eddie:
Ok.
I did Early Childhood Education in college and I enrolled in the 3 semester program (BEd in Early Childhood Education) which I have completed. I want to be a college tutor in no time.
Can I apply for Mphil in Early Childhood Education using the BEd certificate?
Josh:
Yes, but it will depend on the university you’re applying to.
Some universities will require that you do a top-up to get all the concepts required before the MPHIL. Others will accept you and take you through all the necessary courses.
It will be difficult to enumerate or list all universities that will accept it.
But I think UEW can readily accept you
Odehyeba:
Doc, please if one holds a first bachelor degree in basic education and wants to be a tutor at college of education, which qualifications and routes should he passes ?
Thanks
Josh:
Apply for MPhil in basic Education. You can easily get employment at any Colleges of Education and prepare teachers for the basic levels.
Sammy:
May God bless you.. so please
Brief me about the matured application mood
Josh:
For an applicant to apply to a university using the mature application mode,
One has to be 25 years and above
You must have the requirements of the program you want to read or pursue.
But some universities will invite you for an Aptitude Test normally GAT or SAT
General Aptitude Test and Subject Area Test.
VICTOR:
I offered Bachelor of Education in Mathematics at the University, and for my MPhil,I want to either pursue MPhil Mathematics or MPhil Mathematics Education. Which of them gives me more advantage in securing work in the field of academia or outside the field of academia?
Josh:
Now, with the changing needs and demands of the word, STEM programs are in high demand.
If you read MPHIL in mathematics or mathematics education, you’ll be a hot cake.
Actually, that was how I progressed.
From DBE>>BSC Mathematics Education>>MPHIL in Mathematics>>> PhD in Mathematics.
So you’d see that my qualifications are not “skirt and blouse” and that makes me an authority in mathematics!
So follow my path.
Kofi:
Please what is a research proposal dr?
Josh:
A research proposal is a blue print of the knowledge you want to contribute to the existing ones.
A research proposal presents a researchable topic and discusses the WHAT, WHY, and HOW of the topic.
Normally, the WHAT comprises what the topic is about, the WHY Indicates why the topic is important and the HOW talks about the methodology
This research proposal is necessary in your master’s and PhD programs.
afiaagyemang:
Please, I want to offer Bed. in Special Education. I did General program in college.
Please, what are the requirements?
Josh:
You need you college certificate, WASSCE and the application form.
Sammy:
I did
Business management
Economics
Financial accounting at the SHS with general program at the college of education….
Please what program will u recommend for me….
My aim is to become a lecturer……pls
Science or mathematics is it appropriate
Josh:
Normally, you must have the interest and passion for the course. So it will be difficult to recommend a course for you.
For example, if I ask you to take a course in Guidance and Counseling, you won’t like it because your interest is not there.
So I will advise you to examine yourself and select appropriate program that can enable you aspire higher.
Hon. JD:
Please, MED vs MPhil which requires more research work?
Josh:
MPHIL requires robust research component. And this is called thesis.
MED may come with project work. Even in some universities, you’ll do only course work for M. Ed programs. That’s why the MED is not the same as MPhil even though they are all mater’s programs.
Johnny:
Please Dr What are the job opportunities if one is offered a Bsc physics education apart from teaching?
Thank you
Josh:
Physics is one area or discipline that personnel are lacking in Ghana.
If you pursue physics at the bachelor and to the master’s level you have a lot of places to work.
You can work as Research scientist, lecture at pre-tertiary and tertiary levels, work in automobile industry, ECG, etc
Kofi:
Dr please is the research proposal going to be a booklet form
Josh:
It’s normally a 7 to 10 page document which will provide a synopsis of the actual research capturing the WHAT, WHY and HOW of the research topic.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DR. JOSH (PhD) EDUCATION JOURNEY
Read this👇👇..for your own good.
Okay I would give brief description of my journey so far for you to understand why I find myself in the things I do currently including hostel.
I was one of the pioneers of the Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) in 2004 and completed in 2007 from the Mount Mary College of Education.
After completion, I was posted to Akpamu (one of most deprived and arid area in Yilo-Krobo), near Nkurakan in the Yilo-Krobo District.
To give you a vivid picture of how deprived the area was at the time; passenger cars go there on Mondays and Thursdays because of the Nkurakan Market.
If you missed cars on this days, the next move would be to walk so many kilometers to get to your destination. There was nothing like electricity, so there was nothing like television. Our phones are charged during funerals on weekends or on those market days for a fee.
All because I sought sponsorship from the Yilo-Krobo District so I had to serve the district.
I was fortunate to be sent there with three other colleagues who were teaching English and social studies and agriculture. My field at the time was mathematics (JHS mathematics).
The salary was nothing to write home about.
In spite of all these hardship in that arid place, I always converse with people who are knowledgeable in higher education.
One advise a professor told me was to go to university straight when I get study leave with pay. At the university, I should make sure I do a bachelor course. I shouldn’t settle for anything below a bachelor. And I should do the bachelor course in the course that interests me.
Kindly as I was at the time, I told my other colleagues about my conversation with that professor.
In 2008, one Saturday morning, those three friends of mine called me to prompt me that they were going for lecture. I was shocked. Apparently, they had bought a four semester basic education course (they called it top-up at the time). They refused to tell me about it because they new I wouldn’t settle for the top up.
Fast forward, in 2010, I also surprised them with my admission into one of the prestigious universities in the country to study BSC in mathematics, an eight semester course (4 years). While there, I met my wife!
After completion in 2014, I was posted to an SHS to teach mathematics. At this point, my three colleagues after completing their top-course were still at the basic level.
While teaching mathematics in my new SHS, I was also doing Teaching Assistance with the university. I had the opportunity to read my master’s program in mathematics (Pure and applied mathematics). The content for my discipline exposed me to machine learning where I can use python software, advanced calculus, and advanced modelling of natural phenomenona.
Upon graduation, I landed my first contract to work with a company in Accra, because they needed my expertise.
The money I had from that contract was 100 times my annual salary at the GES. As mouth watery as it was, my wife and I ventured into hostel business (about 52 rooms) in Winneba.
While working with the company, I took up a PhD course in mathematics and completed successfully.
I now have about 250 1st degree candidates and 17 masters students who don’t miss my lecture because they want to be shaped for life.
I have now diversified my businesses because I hold the view that no government can pay you to be a millionaire or rich!
My other three colleagues are still at the basic level.
This has been my journey so far.
Hopefully, it would motivate someone to aspire higher. If there’s life, there’s hope!!
