The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has stated that effective July 1 2022 no other form of identification will be accepted for financial transactions in all Bank of Ghana regulated financial institutions.

Customers of financial institutions governed by the Bank of Ghana are therefore urged to update their records with each financial institution with the Ghana Card in accordance with this Notice.

• Specialized Deposit-Taking Institutions;
• Non-Deposit-Taking Financial Institutions;
• Payment Service Providers and Dedicated Electronic Money Issuers;
• Forex Bureaus and Credit Reference Bureaus.

According to the Bank of Ghana, all financial institutions listed above are to take action to update client records with the Ghana Card in accordance with this Notice, Section 30 of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044), and Regulation 12 of the Anti-Money Laundering Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1987).

Can Salaries be Accessed without updating Bank Account with Ghana Card?

One can still access salary through their bank account without the Ghana Card, but they must use it for any new transactions, such as opening a new account or anything that requires them to present or photocopy of their ID card.

Beginning July 1, all banking transactions will only accept the Ghana card. This does not imply that if a bank account is not updated, a person will not receive their income, but rather that a Ghana card is required to do any other financial operations, such as requesting a countercheck when a checkbook is not available.

Additionally, a Ghana card is required in order to make a third-party deposit; otherwise, the deposit will be challenging or impossible to complete.
