Kyra Phillips Career
The year 1999 saw Phillips join CNN. In 2001, as the U.S. Navy Air Wing CVW-9 was getting ready for the war in Afghanistan, CNN gave Phillips access to the facility during her early years there. Phillips worked on a television documentary that would be shown on the show CNN Presents in Antarctica for about a month in January 2002.
Later in 2002, Phillips produced reports on the US Navy’s reconnaissance missions from the destroyer USS Paul Hamilton, the Navy’s Special Operations Command, the Navy SEALs, and Special Warfare Combatant Crewman training, flying in an F-14 Tomcat during an air-to-air combat mission over the Persian Gulf. In addition, she has taken part in TOPGUN training, SWAT instruction, and other law enforcement and weaponry courses through the Navy.
She covered the 2003 invasion of Iraq as an integrated journalist, reporting aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier. Before the F-14 Tomcat’s official decommissioning from use by the U.S. Navy in 2006, Phillips was the last reporter to fly in one.
Phillips’ microphone was left on during a CNN coverage of President George W. Bush’s speech on the first anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s landfall on August 29, 2006, while she was in the restroom. During portions of a private conversation that were shown live, Phillips gave advice on men, blasted her sister-in-law for being a “control freak,” and lauded her ex-husband.
The President’s audio feed was combined with the audio of the dialogue, and both were audible. With an audio summary of Bush’s speech, Daryn Kagan interrupted Phillips’ remarks. The on-air mistake was quickly acknowledged by CNN. In a later appearance on CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman, Phillips made fun of herself in the past.
Alongside Capitol Hill reporter Lisa Desjardins, Phillips co-anchored the CNN Radio election coverage on November 4, 2008. Phillips’ time slot was reduced to an hour in March 2012 when she moved to the 11 a.m. newsroom. She did, however, formally declare on June 26, 2012, that she was quitting CNN to host her own program on its sister network HLN. She quickly joined CNN again as an “investigative correspondent.”
Phillips departed CNN on April 2 to work as a “D.C.-based correspondent” for ABC News.
