Mike Rogers Career
Rogers joined the Calhoun County Commission at the young age of 28. Rogers was elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 1994, and in his second term, he rose to the position of minority leader.
Alabama’s third congressional district seat became vacant when U.S. Representative Bob Riley was elected governor of Alabama in 2002. In the Republican primary, Rogers was chosen. He ran against Democratic veteran Joe Turnham, Jr. in the general election. Turnham had previously run against Riley for Congress in 1998 and had served three terms as the state party chairman.
With Speaker Dennis Hastert guaranteeing Rogers a spot on the Armed Services Committee should he win, the district was targeted by both the Democratic and Republican national parties. Turnham was outspent by Rogers, who raised and spent $1,656,290 compared to Turnham’s $1,015,132. Rogers also held a larger lead in independent expenditures. Turnham lost to Rogers, 50% to 48%. He was a unique Republican candidate endorsed by The Anniston Star in this race.
One of the more conservative voting records of a southern Republican that year was Rogers’ 86% lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union. He backed an amendment on public property, such as schools, stating that people might continue to practice their religion and be acknowledged for their background, customs, and beliefs. He backed legislation that outlawed physically destroying the American flag. Rogers sponsored a bill that declared Congress’s sustained support for military recruiters’ equitable access to schools of higher learning.
On January 6, 2021, an attack on the US Capitol happened while Rogers was there. The following day, he tweeted that “political violence has no place in America” and demanded that there be law and order. Rogers continued to support efforts to invalidate the 2020 presidential election results even after the attack, voting against the certification.
After the attack, he again voted against Donald Trump’s impeachment. His reasoning for making the choice was that Nancy Pelosi’s impeachment was a politicized act that would “further divide our society.”
