The issuance of the teacher licensing cards has begun in the Greater Accra Region and will later spread across other regions. Before the whole issuance process begun, both teaching and non-teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service (GES) were given a couple of months to register on a special portal (Teacher Portal Ghana) launched by the National Teaching Council (NTC) to facilitate the registration and issuance processes. However, there are laid down principles for renewal after expiration. This post will therefore cater for licensing and renewal processes. DO I HAVE TO WRITE THE LICENSURE EXAM ANYTIME I WANT TO RENEW MY LICENSE?

The National Teaching Council (NTC) has disclosed that writing of the Ghana Teacher Licensure Exams (GTLE) occurs once in the lifetime of every GES staff. This however covers both teaching and non-teaching staff. Therefore, when an individual is issued with the license, the only responsibility left is for the fellow to build up his/her Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points and pay his/her renewal fee. Renewal of license will be done automatically every three years. Let’s say, NTC issued the license to you in 2022, it will expire in 2025 hence it will be mandatory to renew it.

NUMBER OF CHANCES ONE HAS TO REDEEM HIM/HERSELF

Again, the National Teaching Council has indicated that at the beginning the council took a decision to offer candidates only three chances to redeem themselves in case they fail during their first sitting for the exam but upon various stakeholder consultations, that decision has been amended. Henceforth, candidates have a LIMITLESS number of chances to redeem themselves.

PENALTIES FOR REFUSAL TO BE ISSUED THE TEACHER LICENSE

The NTC has indicated that there will be a strict kind of enforcement after mass licensing. They have indicated teachers without licenses after the mass issuance will have no business in class. The reason why every teacher or GES staff must register on the teacher portal is that this will enable the council to generate the license card.

NOTE: After officials from the council come to a particular district to issue the license excluding some qualified staff, then they will have to make a follow-up to Accra themselves. Therefore, all qualified staff is urged to register and update their details on their portal and make sure they have met the 100% threshold.
