Did you know that, as a government worker in Ghana, there are a number of tax reliefs available to you? This implies you can lower the amount of taxes you pay to the government on your paycheck.

Now, we are not referring to illegal tax evasion methods here. That is wrong and unacceptable. In this article, I would like to throw the spotlight on tax reliefs by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) that are available to all government workers in Ghana who meet the qualification requirements.

Tax Relief is available to government workers by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

1. Marriage / Responsibility Relief
This relief is granted to a resident individual who takes care of his wife or her husband or takes care of at least two children. The relief is GH¢1,200 per Year.
2. Child Education Relief
The child education tax relief is GH¢600 per child per year. This is granted to a resident individual who pays his or her child’s school fees.
The relief is granted to a maximum of three children attending any recognized registered educational institution in Ghana.
A child under this law includes an adopted child or ward. Both parents cannot claim this relief in respect of the same child /children.
3. Disability Relief
This is granted to people who prove to the satisfaction of the Commissioner-General that they are disabled. This relief is granted to disabled persons who receive income from business or employment only.
The disability tax relief is 25% of the disabled person’s income from business or employment.
4. Old Age Relief
This relief is granted to persons who are 60 years of age or older. The relief is GH¢1,500 per Year.
5. Aged Dependent Relative Relief
The tax relief for the aged is GH¢1,000 per Year. This relief is granted to a resident individual who takes care of a relative who is sixty years old and above.
The relief is granted up to a maximum of two relatives. The relief does not apply to a dependent’s spouse or child. Two persons cannot claim this relief in respect of the same relative.
6. Educational Relief
The educational tax relief is GH¢2000 per year. A resident individual can also be granted educational relief if that person undergoes training to update his/her professional, technical, or vocational skills or knowledge.
